FAQ

Frequently asked questions

My town is not on the list. Can I still call?

Yes. Coverage is set by distance, so a town just outside the circle may still be reachable. Call, give the town and ZIP code, and you will be told plainly whether a roofer works there.

Do the rules change from town to town?

Yes. Newton, Boston, Wellesley and Brookline each run their own building and historic review, with different permit paperwork. One published fee schedule, for example, charges Wellesley roofing permits on the estimated cost of the job, which is not how every town does it. Ask the roofer to check with your local building department.

Is Boston covered?

Only the parts inside the circle: Brighton, Allston, West Roxbury, Jamaica Plain and Roslindale. Those fall under the Boston Inspectional Services Department for permits, and some Boston districts regulate roof material and color.

Does the housing really differ that much between places?

It does. Newton's median home dates from 1942, Needham's from 1965 and Dedham's from 1956, and Arlington has a share of pre-1940 houses similar to Newton's. Roof age, roof shape and the usual failures follow.
